Our Story

George Jeffries (Front Left) and the early team he put together called the 'Elim Evangelistic Band'

In Exeter Since 1928....

There has been an Elim Church serving the community in Exeter since 1928. The church has changed in many aspects of style over these years but has consistently desired to present the timeless hope of the gospel of Jesus.

Elim's Beginnings

Founded in 1915 by George Jeffries, a young welsh evangelist, he travelled all over the UK & Ireland, sharing the gospel. Often drawing large crowds and attracting the attention of the press, these early years were full of remarkable stories of healing.

Exeter was one of a number of places in England the team visited in 1928 - from this a church began.

The congregation later began meeting in the Providence Chapel on Northernhay Road which continues to be it's home today. While the building retains it's external features, internally it has undergone significant development to offer very modern facilities.

Growth, Expansion and an Exciting Future...

Building on the foundations of the past, the church continues to clearly communicate the relevant message of the bible, attracting people from all walks of life who have encountered a relationship with God which has changed their lives.

The church is now bigger than it has ever been and has expanded it's ministry into other locations. The River congregation in Plymouth was started in 2011 and now attracts a vibrant and growing community of diverse people.

In 2016 the church was renamed 'Rediscover Church' which captures the heart of the churches mission - to invite all people to rediscover what they understand church to be and find thriving life in God. 2016 was also the year the church launched its 24/7 prayer room - throughout the day and night there is a permanent space available to church members so they can have encounter date times with God.

The church continues to grow and reach more people both through vibrant activities throughout it's locations as well as with a growing online community. We look to expand further in the near future, as we offer the relevant message of the gospel to communities across Devon.

Our Core Beliefs

The Bible

We believe the Bible, as originally given, to be without error, the fully inspired and infallible Word of God and the supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

The Trinity

We believe that the Godhead exists co-equally and co-eternally in three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and that these three are one God, sovereign in creation, providence and redemption.

The Saviour

We believe in the true and proper deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His real and complete humanity, in His sinless life, in His authoritative teaching, in His substitutionary and atoning sacrifice through His blood shed, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, in His heavenly intercession and His second advent to receive His Church.

The Holy Spirit

We believe in the deity of the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son and the necessity of His work in conviction of sin, repentance, regeneration and sanctification, and that the believer is also promised an enduement of power as the gift of Christ through the baptism in the Holy Spirit with signs following. Through this enduement the believer is empowered for fuller participation in the ministry of the Church, its worship, evangelism and service.

Mankind

We believe in the universal sinfulness of all men since the Fall, rendering man subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.

Salvation

We believe in the necessity for salvation of repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by which the sinner is pardoned and accepted as righteous in God’s sight. This justification is imputed by the grace of God because of the atoning work of Christ, is received by faith alone and is evidenced by the Fruit of the Spirit and a holy life.

The Church

We believe in the spiritual unity and the priesthood of all believers in Christ and that these comprise the universal Church, the Body of Christ.

The Ministry

We believe in the ministries that Christ has set in His Church, namely, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers and in the present operation of the manifold Gifts of the Holy Spirit according to the New Testament.

The Ordinances

We believe in the baptism of believers in water in obedience to the command of Christ and the commemoration of Christ’s death by the observance of the Lord’s Supper until His return.

The Commission

We believe that the Gospel embraces the needs of the whole man and that the Church is therefore commissioned to preach the Gospel to the world and to fulfil a ministry of healing and deliverance to the spiritual and physical needs of mankind.

The Coming King

We believe in the personal, physical and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to reign in power and glory.

The Future State

We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in the final judgement of the world, the eternal conscious bliss of the righteous and the eternal conscious punishment of the wicked.

About Elim

We are an Elim Church, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the UK. Founded in 1915, Elim continues to grow year on year with over 600 churches reaching many of the villages, towns and cities in every region of the country.

Ministries

We actively work in numerous ways to make a difference in people's lives. Some of these ministries include:

SOAR

SOAR (Soup On A Run) is a ministry working with the displaced in Exeter. We provide meals, build friendships and offers support.

RESTORE

RESTORE works with those who have been rescued from the evils of human trafficking, providing support, mentoring and assistance in rebuilding their lives.

Ministries We Support

We support a number of external ministries who are making a great impact on people's lives. Some of these include:

Mercy Ministries UK exists to provide opportunities for women to experience God’s unconditional love, forgiveness and life-transforming power in partnership with her local church. They provide a range of services to see freedom and restoration for women, and to break the cycle of destruction for those who struggle with life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, self-harm and the effects of abuse.  Through their six-month discipleship programme, MPower training days, resources and the many events, conferences and seminars at which they share their unique message of hope and freedom, Mercy Ministries UK looks to address the root causes of issues women face in the 21st century, rather than merely medicating the symptoms or addressing the external behaviour.
